Decorative Animal/Insect Illustrations

ILLUSTRATION

Shown here are mostly spot illustrations, all vector-based, in the animal/insect category. Even though these are birds and insects, more critters will make an appearance, I’m sure. All are available for licensing. Please see the Surface Design section of this website for full collections.

Great Blue Heron

This illustration is more true to life, as Great Blue Heron are often found standing in shallow water, sometimes in marshy areas, looking to catch fish. Inspiration for these were mostly close to home, seeing Great Blue Heron in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in their rookeries or wherever we can glimpse the banks of the Cuyahoga River, but also far off, gazing at these birds in the estuary at low tide at Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge in Washington State. This illustration inspired the Great Blue Heron pattern collection. In addition, there are two oval designs, one with the herons on a dark background, and a variation with a lighter blue behind the birds and a dark outer background.

Wings on the Marsh

Here we have three different drake dabbling ducks (puddle ducks) from my Wings on the Marsh collection: a Mallard, a Wood Duck, and a Pintail. These spot illustrations are vector-based and are meant to be free standing, although they do appear on a background in pattern work.

Wild Honey

Here we have two spot illustrations from my Wild Honey collection, featuring pieces of honeycomb and some bees, one with a lattice on a soft background and one on a blocked background. These spot illustrations coordinate closely with the patterns in the collection.

Ladybug Diner

This mandala-style illustration uses tulips similar to my Tulip Spice illustration, with three little ladybugs hanging out here. This illustration is from my Ladybug Diner collection and uses one of its patterns for the background. Don’t let the name fool you, there are no bugs in the food; bugs associated with food would be icky. The collection utilizes lady bugs, but with the red and black. I added white and shades of gray (to suggest the chrome element) to mimic a 1950s style diner decor. Not all diners were black, white, and red; many used pastel colors, but black, white, and red is still a popular retro look. Hmmm. Maybe we need a black and white tile pattern, too.

More to come…
