Behind the Artwork (Literally)
This background behind the artwork may seem a little bit much, but I experimented quite a bit before deciding on it. The red and turquoise combination in the artwork was intentional, and is grounded in some personal artistic whims, but it makes for a tricky color situation for the background of this showcase image. The background was more vibrant at one point and needed to be desaturated, but not too much. Okay, maybe one could think it needs to be desaturated more, but I say no in this case. The process for doing these coordinated backgrounds lies in using the original layered artwork, minus many elements, plus some thoughtful blending, to result in a look that subliminally suggests that the artwork could have formed from the background. I don’t just slap these onto some grungy background send it off to jpeg-land. While I usually opt for something more aesthetic, this particular background struck me. Sometimes a weird idea needs to live in a weird space.
Desperate to Escape (From the Kitchen)
PHOTO ILLUSTRATION
In a highly abstracted scene for a bit of humor, we have a journal with a recipe and empty hands seemingly working some culinary magic. A distressed figure is making contact with some kind of outside forces, between some kind of celestial star and lightning near a bridge. Escape route? Or maybe she just wants to be somewhere outside, anywhere but in that kitchen. Obviously she is desperate to get out of there. An escape ladder cascades from the book. What is that train doing there? Is she thinking about leaving on one? Or does that signal that company is coming for dinner? Panic signals all kinds of crazy thoughts. I often joke about wanting to spend as little time in the kitchen as possible, but hey, we all have to eat, right? I once mentioned that I don’t like to cook, and someone said, “What kind of woman are you?”
And I said, “One that doesn’t like to cook. Weren’t you listening?”
