Free Spirit Floral
SURFACE DESIGN
Free Spirit Floral is a throwback to a time when I like to do flowers packed in together where some were drawn like real world flowers and some were just made up. I tend to name the made-up versions after real world varieties that are similar, just to have practical callouts.
This collection features an all-over floral illustration with a gold geometric border. These are almost what I have always called my hippy flowers, but not quite. Various spot illustrations are available from these floral motifs, only one of which is shown here. Shown here, we do have a couple floral patterns with a wavy grass pattern made from a gouache background which shows up in many of the patterns in this collection. There is also a pale aqua version.
Two ogee patterns with frosted glass and flowers are shown on the two different grass patterns mentioned above. Then we have four diagonal lattice patterns with floral bunches, branches, and Canterbury bells, on four different color backgrounds that coordinate with the main floral illustration. Next up we have leafy patterns in different arrangements along with some 2-way Canterbury bell stripes on lighter coordinating background colors. The final two patterns are the wavy grass textures with no motifs.
This collection was an interesting undertaking because there was an expanded but coordinated palette. I mapped out each motif’s colors ahead of time. Generous, but tight and structured color, such that some characters never made it to the final.
